Odessa bids farewell to the director of the Museum of History and Local Lore

The funeral service and burial of Igor Slyusar, director of the Museum of History and Local Lore, took place in Odessa.

Yuriy Slyusar, director of the Odessa Museum of History and Local Lore and a researcher,died onJuly 8.

Yuriy Slyusar worked for many years at the Odessa Museum of History and Local Lore, where he served for a long time as deputy director for research. In 2024, following a change in leadership, he became acting director of the museum and later took over as its director.

He actively participated in research activities, museum conferences, and professional events, and was one of the experts who contributed to the development of museology in the Odessa region. His name was frequently mentioned among the organizers and participants of scientific and practical conferences dedicated to history and museum studies.

Over the years, Yuriy Slyusar served on professional advisory bodies in the fields of culture and museum studies, and also headed the Odessa Museum of History and Local Lore as the director of a municipal institution.

He was also a member of the board of the Odessa Regional Organization of the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments and a member of the city’s historical and toponymic commission.

Additionally,Valentina Dovzhenko, an honorary resident of the city of Bilyayivka in the Odesa region,passed away onJune 15 at the age of 84. Valentina Dovzhenko served as a deputy in the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) for 14 years, spanning three sessions (VIII–XX), from 1971 to 1985. 

Earlier, artist,cartoonist, and computer graphicsexpert Yevgen Larionov, who returned to Odesa from Europe in 2024, died on June 1 at 7:55 p.m. 

 Leonid Kondratyuk, a former Honored Doctor of Ukraine,an honorary citizen ofthe city of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi in the Odesa region, and a deputy for five terms, died on the morning of May 25.

The oldest resident of Kiliya in the Odesa region,poet Nina Chernobikina, died on April 18 at the age of 104.
