The Executive Committee of the Odesa City Council has approved unified samples of tombstones to commemorate the fallen defenders of Ukraine.

According to the press service of the Odesa City Council, the choice was based on the results of public discussions.

The mayor's office insists that among the12 proposed options, the models that were submitted to the Executive Committee received the most support.

"Particular attention was paid to the choice of material: the vast majority of participants (89%) were in favor of using light granite. After that, a public discussion and a second vote took place: about 90% of the votes were cast for the proposed projects. Based on the position of Odesa residents, the members of the Executive Committee unanimously supported the decision," the mayor's office said.

Earlier, a scandal erupted in Odesa over the topic of honoring fallen soldiers, with a public statement about manipulations and distortions of words made by one of the panelists. She accused the local authorities and the media of inciting conflict between the families of the fallen and promoting the interests of funeral monopolies. Olha Kvasnytska, a member of the Odesa City Council, said that she had become the target of a targeted campaign of harassment after media publications with a distorted interpretation of her words appeared.

The MP also spoke out sharply about the format of the public discussion, calling it manipulative and not meeting the standards of open dialogue.

In August 2025, Odesa developed a project for a memorial in honor of the soldiers who gave their lives for Ukraine, which is planned to be not only a place of remembrance but also a space where everyone can feel the depth of gratitude and respect for those who died for Ukraine. In April 2025, the Family of Angels of Light NGO proposed to the Odesa City Council and representatives of religious denominations that an honorary military memorial burial be established at the Western Cemetery in Odesa.
