Mykolaiv Plans Comprehensive Demining Strategy with UNDP for 2025

In Mykolaiv, we discussed demining issues and the need to strengthen cooperation with UNDP. In the near future, the needs of the region will be analyzed and priority areas for demining will be identified in 2025.

On March 14, the first deputy head of Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, Heorhiy Reshetilov, met with UNDP Ukraine's Edward Krauser to discuss mine action in the region and the prospects for demining. UNDP representatives emphasized the importance of hearing directly from local authorities about the needs of the region in order to provide the most effective support in overcoming the consequences of the mine threat.

Heorhiy Reshetilov noted that Mykolaiv Oblast needs further demining of large areas, including forests, natural areas, the Kinburn Spit and the Black Sea, which are important for the development of port infrastructure.

Mine action is a key area of security in the region, as the areas remain contaminated with mines and explosive ordnance from the Second World War.

The meeting also discussed factors affecting the pace of demining: the number of demining teams, technical equipment and the use of new technologies such as drones and mechanized systems. The participants agreed to further coordinate actions and plan priority demining areas for 2025.

Last year, experts from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine conducted a study of soil contamination at three demined areas in Mykolaiv region that were affected by shelling and occupation. Soil samples were collected in the areas with the most damaged soil layers near Snihurivka and near the village of Kyselivka in the Pervomaisk community.

It is estimated that it will take up to five years for Ukraine to clear hundreds of sea mines in the waters of Mykolaiv and Kherson. It is planned to involve four countries in the demining. The first stage, which will last 3-7 months, will include clearing ports and ship berths, including the blockaded Kherson and Mykolaiv ports. The main stage of demining will last 3-5 years and cover most of the water area.
