U.S. First Lady Melania Trump announced that she had brokered a local ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia in Oleshky, in the Kherson region. According to the White House, the local ceasefire is set to begin on October 29, 2026.
This is stated on the White House website.
The cessation of hostilities will allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians via an agreed-upon safe corridor.
There are 1,700–2,000 people remaining in the city, mostly elderly, as well as about 50 children.
According to the White House, the First Lady initiated negotiations with Russia and Ukraine. Together with her representative, she coordinated the agreement’s objectives, technical procedures, terms, and conditions with the parties, acting as an exclusive mediator.
She learned about the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky during a private discussion at her event in New York, which took place as part of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
My representative and I immediately utilized the communication channel we had established with Russia and Ukraine during the previous six reunifications of 34 children. Both countries promptly appointed teams to coordinate complex mechanisms, including demining. From that moment on, all parties worked around the clock,” the First Lady explained.
Civilian leaders from both countries—not military officials—will visit residents in their homes to determine what assistance they need. Those wishing to leave will be provided with coordinated escort and transportation to their chosen destination. Melania Trump expects that some people will go to Russia, while others will go to Ukraine.
According to her, an independent American media organization will monitor the work of the Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground. It will document the process to ensure that the wishes of each family are respected.
As Intent previously reported, Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets recently stated that agreements on the evacuationfrom Oleshky are in the final stages.
