Lampadkas, a memorial service, and a military band: The Vyshyvanka Festival has kicked off in Odesa

The Vyshyvanka Festival kicked off in Odesa on August 22. The first event was a commemoration of those who died fighting for Ukraine’s independence, which took place on Birzhovaya Square on the eve of National Flag Day and Independence Day.

According to an Intent correspondent, the organizers deliberately chose to open the festival by honoring the fallen defenders who gave their lives for Ukraine’s independence.

The event was attended by the families of the fallen, military personnel, and residents of Odesa, as well as representatives of the NGO “Family of Angels of Light,” the NGO “Hearts of Odesa Mothers,” Operational Command “South,” the Odesa Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and the Odesa Military Academy.

A memorial service for the fallen was held during the event. Musical accompaniment was provided by the Military Band of the Odesa Military Academy. Participants were also able to light oil lamps and place them as a sign of remembrance.

“Most importantly, we invited the families of the fallen,” explained Natalia Mazharova, organizer of the Vyshyvanka Festival, to “Intent.”

According to her, the event is not intended as entertainment, but rather as a space for the families of the fallen, veterans, and military personnel who wish to pay their respects to those who died.

“Today, ahead of Flag Day and Independence Day, we are beginning with a commemoration of the fallen, the fallen heroes who fought for our independence and who continue to fight for it every day,” said Mazharova.

She added that anyone who wished to do so could come with their own candle and join in honoring the fallen.

This year’s Vyshyvanka Festival continues the traditional events dedicated to Ukrainian culture and independence, but the organizers emphasize the importance of remembering the people thanks to whom Ukraine continues to remain independent.

The festival is held with the support of the Odesa City Council and the Odesa City Military Administration.
