In Kherson region, a member of an armed group that attacked jewelry stores in 2017-2018 will be brought to trial. Investigators of the regional police have completed a pre-trial investigation against a 58-year-old resident of Kherson, who managed to hide from justice for several years.

This was reported by the Kherson Regional Police.

According to the investigation, the offender participated in at least two group robberies, the total amount of damage from which, at the prices of the time, exceeded UAH 9.5 million. The most high-profile episode occurred on May 14, 2018, in one of Kherson's shopping and entertainment centers. Then a group of men dressed as police special forces and armed with assault rifles broke into the jewelry department, smashed the windows with hammers and stole jewelry worth UAH 5.5 million.

While fleeing the crime scene, the bandits engaged in a firefight with patrol policemen, after which they burned their car, took the vehicle from a random couple at a gas station, and fled in the direction of Mykolaiv region. Later, law enforcement officers found out that the same group was involved in a similar attack in Kakhovka in August 2017, where the robbers stole gold worth more than UAH 4 million.

To avoid responsibility, the defendant resorted to radical methods of conspiracy: he moved to Mykolaiv, lost 20 kilograms, changed his hair color, removed a distinctive mole on his face, and used a fake driver's license . Despite these efforts, at the end of last year, the Criminal Investigation Department established his whereabouts and detained him. Currently, the indictment under a whole list of articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including robbery, banditry, resistance and threats to police officers, has been sent to court. The man faces up to 15 years in prison with full confiscation of property.
