Kherson is preparing for the heating season, which—due to Russian strikes on heat-generating and energy facilities—could be the most challenging since the start of the full-scale war.

This was reported by Yaroslav Shanko, head of the Kherson City Military Administration.

According to him, the overall readiness of centralized heating facilities currently stands at 85.5%. As part of these preparations, over 173 kilometers of heating networks have already been readied.

At the same time, the Military Administration is working on backup heating options and strengthening the system’s autonomy. This should ensure the city’s heat supply even if the main heat generation sources are damaged.

Shanko emphasized that preparations for winter involve more than just the routine start-up of the heating system. The city must be ready for possible new Russian attacks on its energy and heating infrastructure.

“For Kherson, the coming winter may be the most difficult since the full-scale invasion began,” noted the head of the Municipal Administration.

He added that city officials do not want to make promises that cannot be guaranteed under wartime conditions, but continue to work every day to prepare Kherson as best as possible for winter and ensure heat in residents’ homes.

On the night of August 27, 2026, Russian troops launched another attack on the Kherson Thermal Power Plant. As a result of the shelling, all heat- and power-generating equipment remaining at the facility was completely destroyed.

Following this, the deputy head of the Kherson Regional State Administration, Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, urgedKherson residents to evacuate to safer regions of Ukraine, at least for the fall and winter months.
