Prymorskyi District Court of Odesa held a debate in the case of Senior Lieutenant Serhiy Shalaev, who is accused of illegal possession of weapons, desertion and murder of activist Demian Hanul on the order of the Russians.

According to the Media Initiative for Human Rights, the first to speak was Yana Neykova, a prosecutor from the Specialized Defense Prosecutor's Office in the Southern Region.

She asked to sentence Shalayev to life imprisonment. The prosecutor emphasized that Sergey Shalaev had fully admitted his guilt. And the evidence provided to the court gives her the right to assert that his guilt has been proven. She also noted that the law requires strict liability for violations of the fundamental human right to life.

The victim's wife, Zhanna Voznyuk, also asked the judges to sentence Shalaev to life imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Sergei Shalaev's lawyer Valeria Gaisina also emphasized that her client admitted his guilt and his behavior during the pre-trial investigation and in court demonstrates not only the admission of guilt, but also his internal demand to take responsibility for his actions. The defense lawyer added that the accused cooperated with the investigation, although prosecutors emphasized the opposite. She added that Serhiy Shalaev tried to transfer money to Zhanna Voznyuk to compensate for the damage. However, the woman refused.

Based on her arguments, Valeriya Gaisina asked the court to sentence her client to ten years in prison. Speaking at the debate, Serhiy Shalaev said he was ready to take a severe punishment.

On March 16, a hearing was held in the case of Senior Lieutenant Serhiy Shalaev, who is accused of the murder of activist Demian Hanul, unauthorized leaving the unit and illegal handling of weapons.
