In Mykolaiv, Gymnasium No. 16 will not yet be able to resume in-person classes. The school needs approximately 1.2–1.3 million hryvnias to convert the facility into a shelter, and the boiler room located in the school’s basement must also be relocated.

This information came to light during a meeting of the Mykolaiv City Council’s standing committee.

According to the Department of Emergency Situations and Civil Protection, there are currently no funds available to build even the most basic shelter. Furthermore, work on the shelter cannot begin until the boiler room is relocated.

The design and cost estimate documentation for the boiler room’s reconstruction is planned to be submitted to the Mykolaivoblteploenergo Municipal Enterprise, and the corresponding budget allocations will be submitted to the Department of Housing and Utilities.

During the discussion, the deputies emphasized that due to the lack of a shelter, students at Gymnasium No. 16 cannot return to in-person classes. They also noted that there is virtually no other school in this part of the city that could accommodate the children.

The commission took note of the information and stated the need to seek funding to reopen the school.

At the same time, during the meeting, council members supported a draft resolution to organize transportation for students with special educational needs who use wheelchairs to Gymnasium No. 36.

As explained by the Department of Education, this particular school has the necessary accessibility features. A special school bus, which the city received through co-financing from the state budget, will be used to transport the children. The route will run from the student’s home to the school and back.

As a reminder, Mykolaiv has seen a steady decline in the number of students and classes in schools over the past few years.
