On the night of August 29, Odessa-based photographerIgor Sytnik died suddenly.

His colleague, Alexander Voropaev, announced the artist’s death without specifying the cause.

“We’ve lost a wonderful person. Last night, Igor Sytnik passed away. I still can’t get over it—it’s such sad news…,” Voropaev wrote.

He recounted that he first saw a photograph by Sytnik titled “Mykhalych.” In it, a man with a beard, a prominent bald spot, and a pipe gazed at the viewer with a half-closed gaze.

Later, Voropaev learned that the man in the photo was Igor Sytnik himself. It was his self-portrait.

According to the photographer, meeting him in person changed his first impression of the photographer.

“Some time later, we met Igor in person, and I discovered a very cheerful and kind person who, until recently, had remained just that and whom I in no way associated with that very ‘Mykhalych,’” Voropaev said.

His colleague also recalled numerous meetings and conversations with Sytnik, calling him a friend.

“My friend, rest in peace. If there’s a special HEAVEN for photographers, you’re there now,” he added.

Igor Sytnik taught himself photography without any formal training. According to his colleagues, he could have even patented some of the techniques he used in his work.

His works include views of Odesa’s architecture, cozy Odesa courtyards, the Odesa Opera House, and portraits. A separate and particularly striking part of the photographer’s body of work was a collection titled “Dreams.”
