Head of Environmental Research Center dies in Odesa

Volodymyr Medinets, PhD in Physics and Mathematics and head of the Regional Center for Integrated Monitoring and Environmental Research, passed away in Odesa.

This was reported by the press service of the I.I. Mechnikov Odesa National University.

Under his leadership, the Regional Center for Integrated Monitoring and Environmental Research brought together physicists, biologists, ecologists, and hydrologists for a comprehensive study of the environment. His research projects include: the program of integrated monitoring of coastal waters of Zmiinyi Island - long-term expeditionary research on changes in the Black Sea ecosystem; research of the Lower Dniester basin, in particular planktonic communities and hydroecological characteristics that are directly relevant to the region's water supply; comprehensive work on the analysis of physicochemical and biological parameters of coastal waters of Odesa and the Gulf of Odesa, which became the basis for environmental assessments and environmental recommendations.

Volodymyr Medinets was a corresponding member of the Ukrainian Ecological Academy of Sciences and the International Academy for the Preservation of Life. In 1970, he graduated from the Odesa Polytechnic Institute, and in 1981 he completed his postgraduate studies at the Institute of Applied Geophysics. In 1982, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the Institute of Global Climate and Ecology. He has published more than 300 scientific papers.

The main areas of his scientific activity were ecological studies of freshwater and marine ecosystems, atmospheric chemistry, radioecology, integrated monitoring of natural ecosystems, anthropogenic and climatic changes in the environment. He participated in the liquidation of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.
