Full member of the Academy of Sciences dies in Odesa

A prominent Ukrainian chemist, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Herbert Leonovych Kamalov died in Odesa at the age of 85.

This was announced by the director of the Bogatsky Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

"Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Herbert Kamalov has passed away. May he rest in peace, may he rest in peace," he wrote.

Herbert Kamalov was born on June 8, 1940 in Baku. In 1963, he graduated from Odesa State University and remained at the Department of Organic Chemistry. Since 1978, he has headed the Department of Catalysis at the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and since 1985, he has also headed a branch of the Department of Organic Chemistry at Odesa University.

In 2003, he was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology for his series of works "Catalysis. Cluster approaches, mechanisms of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis". In 2009, he was elected an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the specialty of physical chemistry. He was also a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.

Kamalov is the author of more than 600 scientific papers, including 38 inventions. He supervised 22 PhD and 2 doctoral dissertations.

The Bogatsky Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is a research institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine located in Odesa. The institution is named after the Odesa chemist Oleksii Vsevolodovych Bohatskyi (1929-1983).

The Institute was established on the basis of the Odesa Laboratories and the Experimental Plant of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences (IZNKh) in 1977.

Borys Perezhniak, a lecturer at the National University "Odesa Law Academy" and dean of several faculties in different years, has recently died. He was 73 years old.
