Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina announced her divorce from French athlete Gaël Monfils. In an emotional statement, she admitted that the war and her personal struggles had affected her well-being.
Elina Svitolina wrote about this on social media.
In her post, the tennis player admitted that this decision was the hardest one she has ever had to make. Svitolina candidly shared how the full-scale war in Ukraine has affected her state of mind and emotional well-being.
"Everyone knows how much Ukraine means to me. But what I’ve rarely talked about is what the war has done to me on the inside. What you haven’t seen are the sleepless nights, the doubts, and the feeling that I’m slowly losing myself…Over time, I realized that I needed to find my way back to myself, and that I couldn’t do that within our marriage,” she noted.
According to the athlete, her husband supported her, but she had to resolve her inner struggles on her own. She also emphasized that Gaël treated her decision with exceptional understanding.
“He treated my needs with strength and dignity that I will never forget,” Svitolina wrote on social media.
The athlete emphasized that no one is to blame for their divorce, and also wrote that while their marriage is ending, their family is not. They will remain parents to their daughter Sky, who was born in the fall of 2022.
