Elina Svitolina and Gaël Monfils, who have been married since 2021, played together in mixed doubles at this level for the first time. Since they weren’t initially sure if they would be on the court in New York, Svitolina said they went into the match with no expectations. According to her, they hadn’t even worked on their tactics until Monday.
“I mean, we train together quite a lot at home or at tournaments. Just yesterday, we worked on a few things for doubles,” the tennis player said.
Svitolina also became the second Ukrainian woman to reach this stage in mixed doubles at the US Open, following Dayana Yastremska in 2021.

The US Open (U.S. Open Tennis Championships) is one of the four most prestigious tournaments in the Grand Slam series, held annually in late summer in New York City. The competition takes place on modern hard courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The tournament has a rich history dating back to 1881 and is known for having the largest prize money of any tennis championship in the world.
Earlier, 19-year-old Nikita Sheremet from Odesa won gold at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships in Paris. In the 50-meter freestyle final, the Ukrainian swimmer clocked a time of 21.13 seconds, becoming the European champion and setting a new Ukrainian record.
