Constitutional Court considers the President's decree to dissolve the Parliament (live)

The Constitutional Court is considering Volodymyr Zelenskyy 's decree to dissolve the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the eighth convocation, the president is also present at the meeting, Intent reports.

As a reminder, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the dissolution of the Verkhovna Rada of the eighth convocation in his inaugural speech on May 20 in Kyiv, during a solemn session of the parliament.

"You will have two months to do it. Do it. Hang up all the medals for yourself. Good points for early parliamentary elections. I am dissolving the Verkhovna Rada of the eighth convocation," Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The President of Ukraine also addressed the government officials: "You can take a sheet of paper, take a pen and free up your seats for those who will think about the next generations, not the next elections. Do it. And people will appreciate it."

He also called on MPs to adopt laws to abolish parliamentary immunity, criminalize illicit enrichment, and amend the Electoral Code to provide for open lists within the two months remaining before the early elections. In addition, Volodymyr Zelenskyy demands that MPs dismiss the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, the Prosecutor General, and the Minister of Defense of Ukraine.

The Grand Chamber of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine adopted a resolution to consider the decree in the form of oral proceedings. In addition, in accordance with Article 75 of the Law of Ukraine "On the Constitutional Court of Ukraine", the Grand Chamber of the CCU recognized the constitutional proceedings in this case as urgent.

The Constitutional Court's decision on the legality of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decree dissolving the parliament and calling early elections is expected in less than a month. This was stated during a break in the court's session on Tuesday, June 11, by the president's representative in the CCU, Fedir Venislavskyi, according to Slovo i Dilo.

"The law on the Constitutional Court of Ukraine gives a month to make a decision on this issue. That is, we can predict that no later than June 29, 2019, there should be a court decision, but we expect it sooner, we are not interested in delaying the process in any way," Venislavsky said.

He also said that he could not predict a situation in which the presidential decree would be recognized as unconstitutional: "We do not allow for the possibility of the decree being recognized as unconstitutional."

"I am convinced that there are no grounds to declare the presidential decree on early termination of the parliament's powers unconstitutional," Venislavsky said.
