In the Odesa region, an inspector at the Izmail Detention Center is accused of smuggling drugs and psychotropic substances into the facility. To conceal the prohibited substances, he used soft children’s toys, inside which he created hiding places.

Employees of the State Bureau of Investigations have completed the pretrial investigation into the employee of the Izmail Pretrial Detention Center. The indictment has already been submitted to the court. The investigation was conducted with the assistance of the Security Service of Ukraine and the leadership of the Ministry of Justice.

According to the investigation, the inspector made an agreement with one of the inmates to illegally deliver narcotics onto the premises of the pretrial detention center. To carry out the agreement, he exploited his official position and attempted to smuggle the prohibited substances directly into the facility.

Among the substances that, according to investigators, the inspector was delivering to the pretrial detention center were methadone, cannabis, and PVP—a particularly dangerous psychotropic substance. To conceal the drugs during a search, the man chose an unusual method: he hid them inside a soft children’s toy.

The scheme was uncovered during another attempt to smuggle the prohibited substances onto the facility’s premises. Internal control officers at the Izmail Detention Center searched the inspector’s belongings and discovered the drugs hidden inside the toy.

The State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) conducted the investigation into the illegal supply of drugs to the facility as part of the nationwide special operation “Stop Trafficking,” aimed at exposing channels of illicit drug trafficking.

This article provides for a sentence of up to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. The accused is currently in custody.
