A 19-year-old resident of Mykolaiv was planning a contract killing of a well-known civic activist in the Kyiv region. The young man was supposed to track down the man during his morning walk and shoot him from an ambush.

This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.

According to the investigation, the young man came to the attention of Russian intelligence due to his activity on social media, where he posted messages supporting fascist and Nazi ideology.

After recruiting him, the FSB sent the young man to Kyiv to carry out a high-profile assassination.

The suspect had been monitoring the daily routine and travel routes of his potential victim— a well-known civil society activist—for a long time. He planned to shoot the man during his morning walk with his dog in the woods.

Following instructions from the FSB, the suspect received the coordinates of a hideout, from which he retrieved a pistol with ammunition and a silencer. He was then supposed to spend the night in the woods near the activist’s home and kill him with several shots from an ambush.

SBU officers foiled the plot in advance and detained the man right at the ambush site while he was preparing for the assassination.

During searches, authorities seized three pistols with silencers and ammunition from the detainee, as well as smartphones containing evidence of his collaboration with the FSB.

Investigators informed the Mykolaiv resident that he was suspected of violating several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

The man is currently in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

Earlier in Mykolaiv, security services detained a deserter recruited by the Russians who was planning a terrorist attack in the city center.
