A woman was hospitalized after being bitten by a black widow spider on a beach in the Mykolaiv region

On the coast of the estuary in the Mykolaiv region, a venomous karakurt spider bit a 60-year-old woman. The victim was hospitalized.

According to the Mykolaiv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, this is the first case of a karakurt bite in the region this season.

According to medical officials, the victim is a woman born in 1966. The incident occurred in the evening on the beach of the Berezan Estuary near the village of Osetrivka. While relaxing, she sat down on the sand, felt a sharp sting in her thigh, and managed to spot a small black spider.

Two hours later, the woman was taken to the toxicology department of the Mykolaiv Emergency Medical Care Hospital. Doctors assess her condition as moderate.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reminded the public that this is currently the peak season for karakurt spiders.

These spiders are most commonly found in July and August on beaches, among dry grass, near estuaries, on vacant lots, in summer cottages, in sheds, garages, and other places with dense vegetation or construction debris.

Doctors warn that a karakurt bite may initially feel like a regular needle prick, but within 15–30 minutes, severe pain in the muscles and joints, pain in the chest, abdomen, or lower back, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, weakness, and anxiety may develop. In severe cases, the person may be unable to move on their own.

If bitten, call an ambulance immediately or take the victim to the hospital as quickly as possible. Until medical help arrives, it is recommended to administer an antihistamine (if there are no contraindications), provide a warm drink, and keep the person warm.

To avoid a dangerous encounter, experts advise against sitting directly on sand or dry grass; use a mat instead; inspect your resting area; avoid walking barefoot through vegetation; and check your clothing and shoes before putting them on.
