A native of Odesa region heads the Romanian government

Romanian President Nicușor Dan has appointed 44-year-old Yevhen Tomac, a native of Ozerne village, Izmail district, as the country's prime minister.

This was reported by the Romanian media outlet Digi24.

According to the publication, the Romanian president signed the relevant decree on June 5. Eugen Tomac will have 10 days to form a new government and convince parliamentary parties to give him a vote of confidence. The newly appointed prime minister will hold official talks with party leaders starting on Monday.

Eugen Tomac (Romanian: Eugen) is a Romanian politician, former member of the Romanian parliament, and currently a member of the European Parliament. President of the People's Movement Party from 2015 to 2020. Professor of History at the Eudoxius Gurmuzaki Institute. He was born on June 27, 1981, in the village of Ozerne, Odesa region, now Safianivka community, Izmail district. At the age of 17, he moved to Romania.

In addition to his positions as a parliamentarian and MEP, Eugen Tomac also served as an advisor to President Traian Basescu on foreign policy and international relations. He supports the Movement for the Unification of Romania and Moldova.

According to Digi24, Tomac is an Orthodox Christian. According to his asset declaration, he lives in Belgium, where he owns two apartments, and does not own a house in Romania. At the same time, despite not having a home in Romania, he owns two building plots: one in the village of 23 August (Constanta County) and the other in the village of Bernadu (Nămţ County).

His asset declaration also shows that he uses an Audi Q5 and a 2020 Dacia Sandero. Tomac is heavily invested in cryptocurrencies and during the 2024 election campaign provided a substantial loan to the PMP party in the amount of 500 thousand lei.

In May 2026, the Romanian parliament dismissed the government of Ilies Bolozhan of the National Liberal Party (PNL), supporting a vote of no confidence with a near-record number of votes.
