Agents from the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) have recovered the flight data recorder from a fighter jet that crashed on August 10, 2026, while on a combat mission in the Berezivsky District of Odesa Oblast.

This was reported by the State Bureau of Investigations.

The recovered “black box” sustained thermal damage as a result of the fire, so experts are working to restore it and retrieve data on the final minutes of the flight.

Investigators are considering several possible causes of the crash. None of them has been definitively confirmed at this time.

In particular, investigators are examining the technical condition of the missile that the pilot fired at the Russian drone and its operational status at the time of launch.

They are also verifying whether the rules for flight preparation, execution, and operation of the fighter jet were followed. In addition, they are examining the aircraft wreckage, evidence from the crash site, and testimony from military personnel.

As emphasized by State Bureau of Investigation Director Oleksiy Sukhachov, no version of events will be ruled out without a thorough investigation.

As previously reported by Intent, on the evening of August 10, a MiG-29 of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was carrying out a combat mission to destroy enemy drones. An emergency situation arose, the aircraft caught fire, and the pilot lost control.

The pilot managed to eject, and his life is not in danger.

A criminal investigation has been launched into the plane crash under Part 2 of Article 416 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of flight rules or rules for preparing for flights, as well as rules for operating aircraft, which resulted in a crash.
