Sich Riflemen
Sich Riflemen — a military unit of the Transdnieper Army of the UNR, formed in 1917 from Ukrainians from Galicia and Bukovina, predominantly prisoners of war from the Austro-Hungarian army. The name derives from the traditions of the Cossack Zaporizhian Sich and was used for volunteer formations of Ukrainians during World War I. The Sich Riflemen participated in battles for Ukrainian independence during the War of Independence. This military unit remained an important part of Ukrainian history and cultural memory.
