Indigenous peoples

Indigenous peoples are ethnic groups living in multiethnic societies who are descendants of populations that inhabited the territory of a country since ancient times, before conquest or the establishment of modern state borders. In Ukraine, indigenous peoples include Gagauz, Crimean Tatars, Karaites, and other small ethnic communities with deep historical roots in Ukrainian lands. Recognition of indigenous people status is important for protecting the cultural, linguistic, and civil rights of these communities.
