UN Security Council convened for a meeting over Russia's use of Oreshnik

Several UN member states have supported Ukraine's request to convene a meeting of the United Nations Security Council after Russia's latest massive strikes and the use of the Oreshnik hypersonic missile.
According to the updated agenda, the UN Security Council will meet on Monday, January 12, at the request of the Ukrainian side, Radio Liberty reported.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said that Kyiv is initiating urgent consultations not only in the UN Security Council, but also in the NATO-Ukraine, EU, Council of Europe and OSCE formats in connection with Russia's allegations of using a medium-range ballistic missile against Lviv region.
On January 9, the Ukrainian Air Force stated that the missile was launched from the Kapustin Yar test site in Astrakhan Oblast. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the use of the Oreshnik missile. The Security Service of Ukraine released a photo of the missile debris found in Lviv region. According to Ukrainian monitoring channels and the Russian service of the BBC, the missile was probably launched without a warhead or with dummy warheads.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said that this was the first time Russia had used a ballistic missile on the territory of Lviv region, although the region had been repeatedly hit by drones and cruise missiles.
On the night of January 9, Russian troops launched a massive attack on Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the Russian military used 36 missiles and 242 UAVs to attack Ukraine. In particular, the Armed Forces confirmed the use of a medium-range ballistic missile by Russian forces from the Kapustin Yar training ground in the Astrakhan region of the Russian Federation. While the military reported that 244 targets were neutralized by air defense, 18 missiles and 16 attack UAVs were recorded at 19 locations.
