The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Counterintelligence Service has reported that a high-profile terrorist attack in Odesa was prevented - an agent of the Russian Federation who tried to eliminate a high-ranking official of the Ukrainian Navy was detained.
According to the SBU press service, the danger was reported by a concerned citizen who called the SBU hotline to report a suspicious person.
According to the plan of Russian special services, the officer's murder was to take place on May 9 to create an information background favorable to the Kremlin to celebrate Victory Day. The killer planned to ambush the Ukrainian officer near his residence and was going to shoot him with an assault rifle.
According to the available data, the attacker was supposed to open fire when the officer was driving his car and leaving the yard. SBU counterintelligence officers and special forces of the SBU Alpha Center foiled the attempt and detained the killer on May 8.
According to the case file, the suspect was a recidivist from Donetsk region recruited by the enemy who had previously served a sentence for premeditated murder. The man came to the attention of racists when he was looking for easy money on specialized Telegram channels.

After being recruited, he arrived in Odesa, where he rented an apartment to prepare for the attempt. First, the suspect tracked down the apartment of a Ukrainian serviceman, reconnoitered the surrounding area and chose a place for an ambush. Then the agent received the coordinates of the caches from the Russian curator, from which he took an AK-74 assault rifle and two loaded magazines.
The killer used a double-bottomed bag to hide the weapon while moving around the city. During the searches, the SBU seized an assault rifle with ammunition and a cell phone used to coordinate his actions with the Russian special agent.
SBU investigators served the agent a notice of suspicion of high treason committed under martial law and an unfinished attempt to commit a terrorist act. The offender is in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
