Antonio Stango, president of the Italian Federation for Human Rights, called on Russia to release Crimean Tatar citizen journalist Amet Suleimanov, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison. The human rights activist emphasized the mortal danger to the prisoner’s life.

Antonio Stango wrote about this on social media platform X.

He noted that the harsh conditions in the Russian prison are detrimental to the journalist, who suffers from severe cardiovascular diseases.

The Italian human rights activist stressed that Suleimanov is in critical condition. According to him, holding the prisoner in Prison No. 2 in Vladimir violates even Russian law itself, given the journalist’s medical conditions, which are incompatible with detention.

Amet Suleimanov is a citizen journalist with the “Crimean Solidarity” association. He reported on the repression and house searches targeting Crimean Tatars following the occupation of the peninsula in 2014. He was detained on March 11, 2020, in Bakhchysarai on trumped-up charges related to the “third Bakhchysarai group of Hizb ut-Tahrir” and was subsequently sentenced to 12 years in a strict-regime penal colony. Due to severe heart failure and the need for valve replacement surgery, the journalist had been under house arrest for a long time, but in the spring of 2023, he was unlawfully sent to prison.
