SBU Head Malyuk explains why Odesa activist Sternenko was killed

The head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Malyuk suggested that the attempted murder of Odesa activist Serhiy Sternenko on May 1 was intended to be a demonstration of revenge for the events that took place in Odesa on May 2, 2014.
He made his assumption at a meeting with journalists, NV reported.
"May 2 is the day when they wanted to eliminate him. It is a symbolic day for the enemy and, at the same time, for us. Serhiy was one of those who prevented the enemy from creating the 'Bessarabian People's Republic' in Odesa in 2014. Serhiy was in the vanguard of those who maintained a statehood position with yellow and blue flags. That's why they wanted to take revenge on him that day," the SBU Head suggested.
He also reminded that this was the fourth attempt on Serhiy Sternenko's life.
A woman from Odesa region who tried to kill a well-known volunteer and civic activist Serhiy Sternenko on May 1 faces 15 years in prison. The attacker was notified of suspicion under two articles at once: high treason under martial law and attempted murder for hire for mercenary motives. The 45-year-old native of Odesa region had recently been living in the capital.
She was recruited by Russian special services late last year when she was looking for "easy money" on the Internet. At first, she performed tasks of tracking cars and transmitting coordinates. Later, she received instructions to make an improvised explosive device and moved to the residential complex where Sternenko lived to spy on him.
On May 2, the suspect in the attack on Sternenko was chosen as a preventive measure in the form of detention until June 29. It was chosen as part of the suspicion of attempted murder, and she was also charged with treason.
On May 1, an armed attack was committed against Sternenko, as a result of which he was injured.
