The Zakhariv District Court of Odesa Region sentenced a resident of the region to seven years in prison for attempting to transport a person liable for military service abroad.
According to the court' s verdict, in April, the convict received a call from her brother, who lives in the Transnistrian region of Moldova, asking her to help his friend cross the border.
The woman agreed and involved her husband, who was transporting passengers in his private car. She did not tell the carrier why he was taking the man to the border.
The passenger was taken off the train and brought to the village to the defendant's house. The man gave 17 thousand hryvnias and 100 dollars to the hostess, who was supposed to transfer the money to her brother. The next morning, the woman was detained.
At the court hearing, the accused pleaded guilty in full. According to the case file, she had no previous convictions and worked at the Novosavytske Psychoneurological Boarding School as a laundry and clothing repair worker. She was raising two young children on her own. The case file contains a certificate that since July of this year, the accused has been registered with a women's clinic for pregnancy.
However, the judges decided that the woman should be punished with the minimum term of imprisonment provided for the crime. The maximum sentence provided for in the Criminal Code of Ukraine is nine years in prison.
In September, police officers detained a man in Odesa region on suspicion of organizing a channel for smuggling conscripts abroad. When asked by law enforcement officers to present documents for verification, the driver of the car actually provided an official ID of a prosecutor from one of the departments of the Odesa Regional Prosecutor's Office, and presented his two passengers as witnesses who accompanied him to be present during the procedural actions.
