Conscript tried to bribe border guards in Odesa region

Law enforcement officers detained a 35-year-old man in Odesa region for trying to bribe a border guard and organize an escape abroad for himself and a friend.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa region.

According to the police, the man offered the border guard 2,000 dollars to ensure that he and his 34-year-old friend would have free passage outside the checkpoint to Moldova during his shift.

The serviceman reported this offer to his superiors, and border guards, along with officers from the territorial police unit, took measures to detain the dealer. The organizer of the escape was detained after he paid the border guards an advance of $1,000 and was going to travel to the neighboring state with his client. The man was supposed to hand over another $1,000 to the border guard after a successful deal.

Investigators seized both men's communication devices and money as material evidence. The organizer was detained in accordance with the procedural procedure.

Based on the evidence collected, the dealer was served a notice of suspicion of organizing illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine, directing such actions, facilitating their commission by providing means and removing obstacles, for selfish reasons, as well as offering and giving an official an unlawful benefit for the commission by an official of any action in the interests of a third party using power and official position. The maximum penalty for these crimes, as sanctioned by Article 332(3) and Article 369(1) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, is up to nine years in prison, with disqualification to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years, and confiscation of property.

The court imposed on the suspect a custodial measure of restraint with the right to be released on bail in the amount of UAH 242 thousand.
