Police and the Security Service of Ukraine detained a military man in Odesa on suspicion of extortion for influencing military officials who make decisions on mobilizing him to a military unit of his choice.

According to the press service of the Main Department of the National Police in Odesa Oblast.

Law enforcement officers found that a man liable for military service who wanted to be mobilized into the Armed Forces and serve in a military unit of his choice in Odesa region turned to the head of one of the support services for advice on enlistment. The latter demanded a reward of two thousand dollars for resolving the issue.

In exchange for this amount, the soldier promised to influence the officials of the military unit who make such decisions, explaining that he personally knew and communicated with them. At the same time, he said that if the man mobilized on his own, without his assistance, he would not have guarantees of service in the rear unit.

After the money was transferred to the dealer, law enforcement officers detained him and seized the money.

Having gathered sufficient evidence, police investigators notified the offender of suspicion of obtaining an unlawful benefit for influencing the decision-making of a person authorized to perform state functions, combined with extortion of such benefit. The sanction of Part 3 of Art. 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine provides for imprisonment for up to eight years with confiscation of property.

The court imposed on the suspect a custodial restraint with the right to be released on bail in the amount of UAH 1.8 million.

Earlier, law enforcement officers served a notice of suspicion to two Odesa residents on the fact of extortion and obtaining an unlawful benefit for influencing the decision-making of a person authorized to perform state functions.
