Police officers detained two young men, aged 17 and 18, on suspicion of setting fire to a post office in Tatarbunary, Odesa region.
According to the police, at around 23:00, the boys broke a window of the post office building, poured gasoline purchased at a gas station and set it on fire.
The fire was extinguished by employees of a private security company who arrived to respond to the burglar alarm. No one was injured. Law enforcement identified the arsonists within two hours.
"The young men were recruited, probably by enemy special services, when they were looking for work. They were promised money for setting fire to the post office. They completed the task and sent a video confirmation to the so-called curator. However, they never received the payment," said Eduard Kolomiyets, head of police department No. 2 of the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district police department.
The police seized material evidence from the crime scene and from the young men, including cell phones with evidence.
Investigators served both suspects a notice of suspicion of intentional damage to property committed by arson. According to the sanction of Part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the suspects face imprisonment for up to ten years. The accomplices were detained in accordance with the procedural procedure. The court imposed on them custody as a measure of restraint with the right to be released on bail.
Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police reported neutralizing an agent group of the Russian Federal Security Service in Odesa. In the near future, they were preparing to detonate an improved explosive device with numerous casualties in southern Ukraine. According to the case file, the defendants managed to carry out one explosion in Kyiv, after which the attackers were detained in hot pursuit.
