A court has sentenced a resident of Kherson who voluntarily agreed to serve in the Russian police during the occupation.
According to the court's verdict, the accused was born in the Russian Federation, but received Ukrainian citizenship in 1993. Since 2017, he has lived in Kherson. In August 2022, during the occupation of Kherson region by Russian troops, he decided to cooperate with the enemy. Having a military education from the Frunze Higher Naval School, the man took the position of "duty officer" in the illegally created law enforcement agency "Main Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in the Kherson region".
Subsequently, in June 2023, the accused signed a contract with the Russian military and served as a sapper in an illegal "volunteer battalion" acting against the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Since the defendant is a fugitive from Ukrainian justice, the court considered the case in absentia. According to the investigation, he was aware of the criminal proceedings, but deliberately avoided being summoned to court.
The court found the citizen guilty of collaboration. His participation in the occupation administration was qualified under Part 7 of Article 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The man was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
According to the Center for Investigative Journalism, it is a 54-year-old traitor Oleksandr Nadel, who now lives in Sochi, Russia. The court refused to confiscate the accused's property because, according to the prosecutor, he had no property that would be subject to confiscation.
Recently, a collaborator from Beryslav who helped the Russian occupiers in search of Ukrainian patriots was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
The court also sentenced a resident of Chornobaivka who organized a base for Russian military equipment and helped to resettle Russians during the occupation of Kherson region.
In addition, a resident of Henichesk, who resettled Russian soldiers in other people's homes, helped set up checkpoints and supported passport issuance on the left bank of Kherson region, faces up to 12 years in prison.
