Maksut Sultanov, an athlete from the Mykolaiv region, was crowned European U-20 Greco-Roman wrestling champion.
This was reported by the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration.
Maksut Sultanov won the gold medal at the continental championship after defeating Alex Margaryan (Armenia) 12–3 in the final match of the 63-kilogram weight class, thereby claiming the title of European champion among athletes under 20 years of age.
The Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration noted that “this is the first gold medal of this caliber for the Mykolaiv region since Ukraine’s independence.”
Ivan Yankovsky took silver in the 130-kilogram category. In the final, he lost to Russia’s Ali Ilyasov, 0–9.
Vladislav Solodchuk won bronze in the 87 kg weight class. In the bronze medal match, he defeated Itskhak Nemsadze 9–0.
The European Wrestling Championships for athletes under 20 are taking place in North Macedonia from July 6 to 12. More than 500 athletes from various European countries are participating in the continental championship. They are competing in Greco-Roman, women’s, and freestyle wrestling. The Ukrainian national Greco-Roman wrestling team consists of 10 athletes.
Yulia Olizarenko, an athlete from Mykolaiv, won the European Strongman Championship as part of the Ukrainian national team and set a world record in the deadlift. She lifted 250 kilograms, breaking the previous world record. Based on the results of the three disciplines, she achieved the highest score among the women in the tournament. Thanks to these performances, the Ukrainian national team took first place in the team standings and became European champions.
In 2024, athletes from Mykolaiv, together with the Ukrainian national team, won gold in the mixed team diving event at the European Championships in Antalya. This was Ukraine’s second consecutive gold medal in mixed team competitions at the European Championships. In2023, the Ukrainians won in Rzeszów, and in 2022 and 2024, they took silver—in Rome and Belgrade, respectively.
