According to the press service of the Mykolaiv City Council, on March 1, team sabre fencing competitions among juniors took place, where the Ukrainian team of Victoria Korotchenko, Sofia Golovkina, Valeria Morenets-Kubanska, and Maya Velychko won bronze medals.
The path to the medal began with a 45:39 victory over Poland in the 1/8 finals. In the quarterfinals, the Ukrainians confidently defeated Greece - 45:32. In the semifinal match, the Ukrainian team lost to the French national team - 39:45. However, in the match for third place, Ukrainian saber fencers won bronze medals, defeating the German team with a score of 45:41.
Recently, Mykolaiv has increased bonuses for athletes, decided to popularize physical culture among the population and introduce mechanisms for sports rehabilitation for children and adults with special needs.
Mykolaiv also decided to make one-time cash payments to athletes from municipal sports schools who achieved high results at national and international competitions in the second half of 2024. We also plan to significantly increase the bonus fund for gifted athletes. Previously, this fund amounted to about one million hryvnias, but now its size will increase to almost two million.
More than UAH 189 million has been allocated for sports development in 2025. These funds will be used to build shelters in sports facilities, reconstruct facilities, create a new sports town, organize competitions and promote sports among Mykolaiv residents. The new initiatives will help develop the city's sports infrastructure and support the achievements of local athletes.
