Since the beginning of 2026, more than 570 ships have been attacked in the Black Sea, and at least 40 sailors have been killed. Amid the growing danger, the ports of Greater Odesa received fewer than 10 ships last month, compared to about 400 in July.
Suspilne reports this, citing the Financial Times.
According to Ambrey, in the third quarter of the year, an average of more than four attacks on ships were recorded daily in the Black Sea. From July through September, approximately 387 ships were hit—more than five times as many as in the previous quarter.
Ships are being targeted both during attacks on ports and as a result of targeted attacks by drones, missiles, and unmanned boats. According to Ambrey, over the past 45 days, Russia accounted for about 90% of the attacks on shipping.
The increased risks have affected the operations of Ukrainian ports. Due to the danger, Ukraine has partially rerouted its grain exports through Danube ports. In August, maritime exports of agricultural products fell to 1.4 million metric tons—approximately 75% below pre-war levels.
Ship insurance has also become more expensive. According to the Financial Times, the cost of coverage for war risks in the Black Sea can reach 15% of a ship’s hull value—nearly twice as much as for ships in the Persian Gulf.
The publication notes that due to the intensity of the attacks, the Black Sea has become one of the most dangerous routes for commercial shipping.
