The Environmental Inspection Commission has identified the causes of the sewage leak on Yevhen Chykalenko Street in Odesa. The pipe was damaged due to prolonged use and natural wear and tear of the sewer system.

This was reported by the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.

During the inspection, the commission determined that due to damage to the sewer system, sewage was leaking onto public property in the private sector. At the time of the inspection, repairs were already underway on the damaged section of the pipeline. The pipe has now been replaced, so the sewage leak has been completely eliminated.

Earlier, environmental inspectors checked water quality at “Fregat” Beach in Kryzhanivka, Odesa Oblast, following reports of possible renewed pollution of the Black Sea. A sewer line rupture had occurred there in June.

Following media reports, inspectors traveled to the site and surveyed the waters near the beach. Near the storm drain outlet, they observed only signs of natural algae decomposition. No visual signsof pollutionwere found in the rest of the sea area.

Experts also collected seawater samples for laboratory analysis.

According to preliminary results, no ammonium nitrogen was detected in the samples. It is this indicator that can indicate the presenceof sewage in the water.
