The Cabinet of Ministers has renewed the composition of the Commission on the Crimean Tatar language

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has adopted a resolution amending the Regulation on the National Commission for the Crimean Tatar Language. The decision is aimed at intensifying the protection of the language of the indigenous people and coordinating the implementation of the State Strategy for 2022-2032.

In particular, the government has updated the composition of the commission and designated the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience as the body that will continue to provide organizational, informational and technical support for its activities. The main purpose of these innovations is to ensure the stable operation of the commission as a key advisory body that coordinates the efforts of the authorities to ensure the full functioning of the indigenous language.
The Mission of the President of Ukraine in the AR of Crimea played an important role in the regulatory support of the Commission's work, as the Permanent Representative is now one of the co-chairs of this body. It should be reminded that the National Commission was established by a government decision in early 2023 to address the problematic issues of language development. One of the most significant results of its activities was the approval of a new spelling of the Crimean Tatar language based on the Latin script.
The work on this spelling lasted for more than a year with the participation of leading linguists, scholars and representatives of the Crimean Tatar community. The new rules, based on the Latin alphabet of 2021, now cover all key areas of life: from education and media to administrative documentation and place names.
The official transition to the Latin alphabet, which began at the dawn of Ukraine's independence, is now virtually complete. The new spelling is recommended for use by all authorities, including in the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Sevastopol, as an integral part of the strategic plan for the revival of the Crimean Tatar language until 2032.
