Today, on March 16, the Prymorskyi District Court of Odesa held a hearing in the case of Senior Lieutenant Serhiy Shalaev, who is accused of the murder of activist Demian Hanul, unauthorized leaving the unit and illegal handling of weapons.

The prosecutor of the Specialized Defense Prosecutor's Office of the Southern Region requested to extend the measure of restraint in the form of detention without bail. She noted that she had sent the request on March 4.
"Given that he is accused of murder for hire for mercenary purposes, possession of ammunition, and unauthorized abandonment of a unit, the risks have not ceased to exist. I believe that at the moment there are still risks of unlawful influence on witnesses, specialists, experts known to him, risks of escaping criminal liability, and the risk of interfering with criminal proceedings in other ways, by failing to appear in court," the prosecutor said.
She also drew the court's attention to the fact that during the interrogation at the last hearing, Serhiy Shalaev himself said that he had deleted important data from his phone and fled the crime scene. In addition, according to the prosecution, he may commit other crimes if he is released.
The victim's representative, given the circumstances of the case, supported the prosecutor's motion. The victims also asked the court to extend the period of detention. The defendant's lawyer did not object to the motion. The judges, having conferred in a deliberation room, extended the pre-trial restraint in the form of detention in a pre-trial detention center for 60 days - until May 14, 2026. The amount of bail was not determined.
The prosecutor also requested to examine video materials, in particular from CCTV cameras and an investigative experiment, but for technical reasons, the video could not be played. The court asked the prosecution to bring their laptop to the next hearing.
