Odessa Medical University Has Elected a New Rector

Elections for the position of rector were held at Odessa National Medical University. Stanislav Arkadiyovich Schneider, Doctor of Medical Sciences and professor, was elected rector of the university .

 He received 567 votes, accounting for 88 percent of the total number of voters.

In 2025, Stanislav Schneider reported a family income of over 6.3 million hryvnias. His personal income was significantly lower—salaries from several jobs, a pension, compensation for damaged property, and charitable donations totaled less than 700,000 hryvnias.

The family’s main source of income was the business activities of his wife, Svitlana Levina, which brought in over 5 million hryvnias. She received another half a million hryvnias from renting out property. Despite this, the family’s total annual income fell by nearly 70%.

Prior to this, Valerii Zaporozhan had headed the university for nearly 24 years. In July 2018, Uliana Suprun, who was serving as acting Minister of Health, dismissed him. The reason was that Zaporozhan refused to allow a Ministry of Health commission to enter the university and provide it with the necessary documents for an audit.

Zaporozhan himself then went on sick leave and filed a lawsuit against the Ministry of Health. At the same time, he appointed the current vice rector, Yuriy Bazhor, as acting head of the university. The Ministry appointed Kostyantyn Aymedov as acting rector of Odesa National Medical University.

Later, leadership changes occurred among both Zaporozhan’s supporters and the ministry. Meanwhile, a protracted conflict began at the university. Eventually, Valerii Zaporozhan was reelected as rector, but for some time he faced registration issues due to lawsuits filed by his own supporters—including Yurii Sukhin.
