Mykolaiv to receive dozens of trams from Europe

Mykolaiv will receive 40 tramcars from the Swedish city of Gothenburg. These are M29 trams, which were previously used in the Swedish urban transportation system.
This was reported by the press service of the Mykolaiv City Council.
The transfer of vehicles was made possible through cooperation between Mykolaiv and Swedish partners who are seeking to support public transport in the Ukrainian frontline city. Both cities have developed tram networks, and the transfer of cars is based on the technical compatibility of the systems and the experience of Mykolaivlectrotrans in maintaining and modernizing trams.
Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych emphasized that the development of public transportation is critical for the city during the war.
"Public transport is critical for the functioning of our city, especially in times of war. Increased mobility helps to ensure the smooth operation of the city for residents and supports our long-term recovery," said the mayor.
The initiative to transfer transport was launched by Ragnar Lund, director of the Rethinking Cities in Ukraine platform. It was he who helped establish cooperation between the city ofMykolaiv, Mykolaivelectrotrans, and the Swedish company Göteborgs Spårvägar.
According to Lund, the transfer of the cars became possible after Göteborg began to gradually decommission its M29 trams.
"This cooperation demonstrates how European cities can support each other in practice. When Gothenburg began to gradually decommission M29 trams, it became possible to transfer them to the city, where they will continue to serve people," he said.
Currently, the final decision on the transfer is to be made by the Gothenburg City Council and the Regional Council. At the same time, the transport company has already confirmed its readiness to transfer the trams to the Ukrainian city.
In addition, the Swedish side is considering partially financing the delivery of the cars to Ukraine.
