Russian troops launched a massive nighttime attack on energy facilities in the Odesa region. As a result of the strikes, approximately 24,000 consumers in various districts of the region were left without power.

This was reported by Oleg Kipper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration.

According to him, utility workers are continuously carrying out emergency repair work to restore power to consumers.

On October 17, rolling blackouts were introduced in Odesa and the region. Power will be cut off according to a schedule for 12 hours at a time.

Subsequently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the day before, Russia had launched one of the most powerful strikes against Ukraine’s energy sector in recent times.

The head of state noted that from 7:00 p.m. the previous day until 7:00 a.m., Russian forces had used more than 320 jet- and gasoline-powered attack drones against Ukraine, as well as cruise and ballistic missiles and loitering munitions.

The Ukrainian military shot down a significant portion of the aerial targets; however, the massive and continuous strikes on energy facilities are having significant consequences and are exhausting the capacity to restore damaged infrastructure.

In addition, on the night of October 16, the Russian army once again attacked the Odesa region. The strike damaged an energy facility, leaving part of the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district without power.
