In the Mykolaiv region, fines for overloaded trucks have quadrupled

The Mykolaiv region has become the leader in Ukraine in terms of the growth rate of fines for overloading freight vehicles. In the first five months of 2026, the number of fines issued there quadrupled compared to the same period last year.

This is according to data from the Opendatabot service, compiled based on information from Ukrtransbezpeka.

Overall, in Ukraine from January through May 2026, automatic weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems recorded 1,388 violations of weight limits. As a result of these inspections, fines totaling 19.2 million hryvnias were issued.

At the same time, compared to the same period in 2025, the number of violations in Ukraine has nearly halved. Last year, during the first five months of the year, 2,591 violations were recorded, totaling 31.5 million hryvnias.

Carriers in the Dnipropetrovsk region received the most fines this year, with 181 fines issued there. The Vinnytsia region ranked second with 159 fines, and the Poltava region ranked third, where 155 violations were recorded.

Despite an overall decline in the number of fines across Ukraine, the Mykolaiv region showed the opposite trend. It was here that the largest increase in the number of fines was recorded among all regions of the country. A noticeable increase in the number of fines was also observed in the Sumy and Volyn regions.

According to analysts, the average fine for overloading trucks rose from 13,100 hryvnias in 2025 to 13,800 hryvnias in 2026.

Currently, there are 62 automatic WIM systems operating in Ukraine, which monitor compliance with weight limits for freight vehicles without stopping them. Their purpose is to preserve road infrastructure and reduce damage to roads caused by overloaded trucks.

As a reminder, nearly 360 million hryvnias were allocated from the state budget for repairs to the highway to Mykolaiv. The contract for the work was awarded to the company “Autostrada,” which, despite claims of a crisis in the road sector, continues to receive large government contracts.
