Crimea is running out of burial places despite occupiers' reports

Despite the cheerful reports of the occupation authorities about 'improving public health', the real situation in Crimea looks different - thanks to satellite images and the expansion of cemetery fences. The acute shortage of burial sites is forcing the administration to urgently allocate dozens of hectares of new land.

A large-scale OSINT study based on the analysis of nearly 400 satellite images revealed the real situation in Crimea. The journalists, together with experts, traced the dynamics of 13 key cemeteries since 2021, selecting 30 high-quality images for each object.
The conclusions of experts, including Serhiy Gapon (World Data Center), confirm that the area of some necropolises has increased by more than 10% in recent years. The most critical situation is in large cities. Sevastopol and Simferopol have actually exhausted the resources of their existing cemeteries, which is why huge areas are being urgently allocated for new graves: 47 hectares near Perov and a total of about 40 hectares in Sevastopol.
This investigation clearly proves that the real mortality rate on the peninsula is significantly higher than the underestimated figures of Russian statistics.
Earlier, officers of the territorial police department of the Berezovsky district of Odesa region detained two 13-year-old residents of the Kurisov community, who are suspected of having been messing around at the cemetery during the day and desecrated the graves of fallen Ukrainian defenders.
According to the police, the families in which the teenagers are being raised are registered as being in difficult life circumstances.
Investigators have now registered the incident in the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Part 2 of Article 297 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This is a desecration of the burial place of a person who defended the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and participated in the implementation of measures to ensure national security and defense, repulsion and deterrence of armed aggression by Russia.
