A soldier will stand trial in Odessa for a fatal traffic accident while under the influence of drugs

In Odesa, an indictment has been filed against a 31-year-old soldier accused of violating traffic laws while under the influence of drugs. A female passenger on the minibus was killed in the accident, and six other people were injured.
This was reported by the Odesa Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense Affairs in the Southern Region.
According to the investigation, the accident occurred on the morning of April 7, 2026, on Balkivska Street in Odesa. The servicemember, driving a Volkswagen Multivan while under the influence of drugs, failed to maintain a safe speed and collided with a minibus carrying at least 14 passengers.
As a result of the collision, a 64-year-old female passenger died at the scene. Six other passengers sustained serious and moderate injuries and were hospitalized.
After the accident, the soldier was detained. The court ordered him to be held in custody without the right to bail. An indictment has also been filed with the court.
The man’s actions were classified under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of traffic safety rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, if this resulted in the death of the victim.
He faces up to 10 years in prison and a driving ban for the same period.
As a reminder, in April 2026, a Volkswagen Transporter driven by a military servicemember collided with a route bus. As a result of the accident, one female passenger died at the scene, and eleven other people sought medical attention.
In addition, on the night of August 9, 2026, a fatal traffic accident involving a cargo van and two minibuses occurred on the Odesa–Mykolaiv highway. Three people were killed in the accident, and eight others were injured.
