A presentation of a new book on local history by Dmytro Zhdanov and Kyrylo Bulakhovsky took place at the Odessa Bookstore-Café. The book is dedicated to the history and evolution of the city’s streets.
The authors spent half a year working on this popular science book. In this first volume, the researchers focused on the city center, examining the origins of the names of Deribasovskaya, Gavanaya, Grecheskaya, Nizhinskaya, and other streets, as well as the prominent figures who lived there.

According to the book’s co-author, Kirill Bulakhovsky, working on the book was a quest for historical and toponymic truth.
During the event, attendees discussed with the researchers how approaches to studying Odessa’s past have changed over time and why the city constantly needs new historical research.
In addition to introducing the new publication, the organizers invited attendees to delve deeper into the topic of rethinking the city’s history. Participants had the opportunity to compare contemporary research with older local history books—particularly those from the Soviet period—in which many facts were either omitted or presented through an ideological lens.

During the discussion, local historians and event guests examined key questions regarding how the discovery of new archives and sources is changing our view of Odessa’s past. Participants discussed the evolution of approaches to the study of toponymy, as well as historical narratives that had previously been overlooked by researchers.
