Thousands of cases of speeding recorded in Odesa region

In July, about 5,000 cases of speeding were recorded in Odesa region, which is one of the main violations that leads to road accidents. Most accidents occur on intercity highways, where drivers often ignore the limits.
Alla Marchenko, head of the press service of the Patrol Police Department in Odesa Oblast, told Ukrainian Information Service about the scale of the problem, the causes of violations and the fines.
July on the roads of Odesa region was marked by a sharp increase in speeding violations - during the month, the patrol police recorded about 5,000 such cases. Speeding remains the main cause of road accidents in the region.
"In the summer, we traditionally record a surge in violations - people go on vacation, to the sea, and traffic increases," said Alla Marchenko.
According to her, patrol police record violations using TruCam devices, mobile crews and automatic recording systems. However, despite the fines, the fight against violators continues.
Currently, about 20-30% of drivers ignore paying fines within the allotted 15 days, after which the cases are referred to the enforcement service.
Although serious speeding is less common within Odesa, the situation is much worse on intercity roads. It is there that the most serious accidents occur - with injuries or deaths. In such areas, cameras and other means are being installed to reduce accidents.
According to the police spokeswoman, Finland has not recorded a single accident with victims in a year, and Ukraine is striving for the same result. At the same time, she emphasized that our traffic is significantly different, and despite the daily work of law enforcement, the situation remains difficult.
The number of accidents traditionally increases in summer. According to patrol police statistics, the main causes are speeding, failure to maintain distance, violation of maneuvering rules at intersections, and conflicts with pedestrians. And the responsibility often lies with both drivers and pedestrians. Unlike private vehicles, minibus drivers usually do not exceed the speed limit. Cases of violations by them are rare.
In 2024, law enforcement officers drew up more than 65,000 reports for drunken driving, which is 19% more than in the first year of the full-scale invasion. Odesa region was among the leaders in terms of the number of such violations: 7,073 protocols, second only to Dnipropetrovska oblast and Kyiv.
