The Verkhovna Rada has adopted two resolutions on renaming settlements whose names contain symbols of Russian imperial policy or do not meet the standards of the state language.

This was announced by the chairman of the subcommittee on decolonization Roman Lozynsky.

New names of the settlements of the region:

  • Polyno-Osypenkove village of Berezivskyi district → Brashevanivka village;
  • Nadezhda village of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district → Nadezhda village;
  • Nadezhdivka village of Bolhrad district → Nadiia village;
  • Yurivka village of Bolhrad district → Yurivka village;
  • Yanovka village of Podilskyi district → Yanovka village;
  • Olzhynove village, Rozdilnyansky district → Olzhynove village;
  • Polezne village, Rozdilnyanskyi district → Male Hrosulove village;
  • Kholmske village of Bolhrad district → Selioglo village;
  • Novokholmske village of Bolhrad district → Aliyaga village.

According to Lozynsky, most of the renaming is carried out in accordance with the law on decolonization, which prohibits names glorifying Russian figures, the empire, or Soviet totalitarianism, and most of the proposals for new names came from local governments. Others were initiated by local communities on their own in a general way. The vast majority of new names are historical names, neutral or emphasizing national identity.

Earlier, Intent wrote that activists of the NGO "Decolonization.Ukraine" updated the map with the number of streets that they believe should be renamed, counting 207 of them in Odesa region. For comparison, the number of such streets in Mykolaiv region was 73 compared to 111 a week ago, and in Kherson region - 66 compared to 94. However, in June 2024, there were 581 such streets in Odesa region, while in Mykolaiv and Kherson regions there were 407 and 156 non-decolonized streets, respectively.
