A resident of Kherson won a lawsuit against Russia for more than 1.8 million hryvnias in compensation for lost income due to the occupation of the village of Shchaslyvtseve in the Henichesk District. Before the full-scale invasion, the man owned seven modular cabins near the Sea of Azov and rented them out to vacationers.
According to the ruling of the Kherson City Court, the man’s lawsuit against the Russian Federation was granted in full.
In March 2021, the man purchased a 0.13-hectare plot of land in Shchaslyvtseve. He subsequently bought seven modular cabins, furnished them with furniture and necessary equipment, and prepared them for rental to tourists.
In May 2021, the owner leased the cabins to a business owner who was to rent them out to vacationers. Under the contract, the man received 23,125 hryvnias per month. By the start of the full-scale invasion, he had earned 231,250 hryvnias from the rentals.
After the occupation of Shchaslyvtseve, the tenant stopped making payments. In March 2022, he informed the owner that due to Russian aggression and the inability to work in the occupied territory, he could no longer fulfill the terms of the contract.
The man filed a lawsuit to recover from Russia the funds he could have earned had he had access to his property. The claim concerned lost income for the period from March 2022 to September 2025.
According to the damage assessment, this amount totaled 1,836,728 hryvnias, or $44,451 at the official exchange rate on the date of the assessment.
The court concluded that the claim was well-founded and ordered that this amount be recovered from the Russian Federation, represented by its Ministry of Justice. Additionally, 16,640 hryvnias in court fees are to be recovered from the Russian side in favor of the state.
