The bridge to Bessarabia was built under fire from Iskander missiles and has already been completed

In the Odesa region, construction has been completed on a new bridge near Mayaky, which is intended to ensure a connection with Bessarabia even in the event of new Russian attacks. More than 200 million hryvnias were spent on the project.

Serhiy Sukhomlyn, head of the State Agency for Infrastructure Recovery and Development of Ukraine, spoke about this in a media interview.

Construction of the new bridge began in April 2026, a few kilometers from the old bridge in Mayaky. The decision to build it was made after Russian strikes damaged the main crossing, which serves as a key route to Bessarabia.

The old bridge was struck by drones in December 2025. According to Sukhomlyn, after the first attack, specialists repaired one section of the bridge within a day and restored traffic.

The crossing was fully repaired in about two months. However, Russia later struck it again, partially destroying the bridge.

Therefore, while the old bridge was being repaired, construction began on a new one. During the work, Russian forces also attacked the construction site.

According to the Agency’s director, the site was struck twice by“Iskander” missiles equipped with cluster warheads. As a result of the attacks, six people were injured, and equipment was damaged.

Despite this, construction was completed. The new bridge was designed based on experience gained in restoring infrastructure during the war.

“The bridge is fully built, and the structures we’re using—because all of this is based on experience—again, it cost around 200-something million hryvnias, but it’s nearly impossible to destroy,” Sukhomlyn said.

He noted that the new structure should be significantly more resistant to attacks. According to the head of the Recovery Agency, even strikes by ballistic missiles should not completely sever the connection with Bessarabia.
