One of the schools in Mykolaiv will not open its classrooms on September 1

The building of Lyceum No. 38 in Mykolaiv will not open on September 1. Renovation of the shelter is still underway, and the work is currently scheduled to be completed in early December 2026.

According to Mykolaiv City Council member Dmytro Sichko, four working meetings have been held at the site over the past two weeks, attended by the contractor, the City Council’s Capital Construction Department, designers, technical supervisors, and Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych.

He noted that exterior concrete work is currently the main focus at the site. This work involves, in particular, reinforcing the building’s walls and installing emergency exits for the children. In the past week alone, six truckloads of concrete were delivered to the site, and another 15 are scheduled to arrive in the near future.

At the same time, additional work has arisen during the renovation due to problems left behind by the previous contractor. A criminal investigation has been opened into this matter.

Because of the need to perform this additional work, changes must also be made to the project documentation.

As the deputy emphasized, this process could take about two months.

Therefore, the repairs will not be completed by September 1, and the classrooms for the children will not open. At the last working meeting, the estimated completion date for all work was set for early December 2026.

Sichko noted that the timeline currently depends not on the contractor’s pace of work, but specifically on the duration of the procedure for amending the project documentation. Barring any extraordinary circumstances, the work is scheduled to be completed in December.

As Intent previously reported, Mykolaiv is considering changes to the organization of the school day due to an increase in rocket attacks. Among the possible changes are holding classes in two shifts in shelters and starting classes at 7:30 a.m.
