The water supply system in the village of Novovorontsovka in the northern part of Kherson Oblast is being restored. An additional UAH 40 million has been raised for the modernization. The project is scheduled to be completed in June this year.
This was announced by the head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration Oleksandr Prokudin during a press conference.
According to him, two new wells have already been built, one of which is powered by solar panels. Four more have been drilled and are in the process of being equipped, and one has temporarily suspended operations. However, the main problem with the village's water supply is outdated pipelines, which cause about 70% of water to be lost.
According to the official, a separate project is aimed at replacing them, which is being implemented with the support of Dutch partners. They not only provide technical assistance but also train specialists. In particular, specialists from the Kherson region are being trained in the Netherlands to effectively maintain the updated water supply system in the future.
Prokudin said that by June, the village will have completely replaced pipes and modernized water facilities. In addition, each well will be equipped with autonomous power plants running on alternative energy sources. This will reduce the cost of water supply and reduce tariffs for local residents.
Despite all the difficulties, the work is ongoing, and by summer the residents of Novovorontsovka will be able to get high-quality drinking water.
"I think we will implement this project by June, although it is very difficult," Prokudin said.
On June 6, Russian troops blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, causing 600 km² of Kherson region to be flooded. At the same time, settlements located above the dam faced a shortage of drinking water.
In particular, in Novovorontsovka, the water level dropped critically, as many wells were connected to the Kakhovka reservoir, and its shallowing significantly affected the water supply.
To provide local residents with water, the village has completed the conservation and arrangement of all the old wells, which can now be used to draw water.
On February 22, 2023, the water from the well that provides water supply to Novovorontsovka disappeared completely.
